Mental Health Promotion Campaign Launches in Harrow Press Release - 16 Dec 2008
Mind in Harrow and Harrow Primary Care Trust (PCT) launched their new mental health promotion campaign, People Like Us, at the Harrow Healthy Living Centre on16 December 2008. This innovative campaign aims to improve knowledge and understanding of mental health and increase awareness of mental health services among Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities in Harrow.
Members from both Mind in Harrow (a local charity which supports people experiencing mental health problems in Harrow to live independent and full lives) and the Harrow PCT attended the launch, along with representatives from various BME communities.
The launch of People Like Us follows extensive research, planning and consultation with Harrow's communities. To mark the launch today, Mind in Harrow, presented a showcase of all the elements that make up the People Like Us campaign, which include:
- Social marketing (including posters, media relations and advertising)
- A unique campaign website detailing local services in various languages alongside spiritual images and religious text (www.peoplelikeus.info)
- A Signposting Booklet detailing where to find help in Harrow
- People Like Us mental health promotion workshops aimed at educating people about mental health and engaging people with the campaign Abdi Gure, Somali Advocacy Worker at Mind in Harrow, comments, "From the research that was undertaken it is clear that there is a general lack of awareness of mental health conditions, services and treatments among BME communities. By educating people about mental health problems and the available services, the People Like Us campaign hopes to reduce any stigma by improving knowledge and awareness. We are all hoping to encourage people to access the treatment and support that they need."
The People Like Us campaign will run from December 2008 - March 2009.
