Project Volunteering

Mind in Harrow are recruiting volunteers for Hayaan (Somali Mental Health) Project, Mental Health Information Helpline and the Hidden Minds Project.

Stepping Stones Project

Brief outline of project: The Stepping Stones project organises short-term courses and activities for people who have personal experience of mental health difficulties.

The Stepping Stones project looking for volunteers who would be willing to undertake two volunteering opportunities that have arisen in connection with our courses.

Hayaan (Somali Mental Health) Project – Moving to a Better Place


Brief outline of project: The Hayaan Coordinator and Volunteer Peer Educator team aim to reduce the sense of isolation experienced by Somalis with mental health problems, improve mental well-being and increase access to mental health and other social care services through fortnightly workshops held 12-2.30pm at Health Living Centre in Wealdstone.

Volunteer Title: Hayaan Peer Educators

Key Roles and Responsibilities: Attend 3 day training (next programme running in July 2011), assist with planning and running of fortnightly workshops including evaluation and offer signposting support to workshop participants.

Days and Hours: Expected attendance at one workshop per month on Thursdays 12-2.30pm at Health Living Centre in Wealdstone, planning sessions once per month and ad hoc assistance to organise workshops or offer signposting support. Total average 4 hours per week.

Time commitment within project: 1 year

Any other specific requirements: Member of the Somali community, willing to provide 2 references and complete an Enhanced CRB check with supporting documentation.

Mental Health Information Helpline

 
Brief outline of project: The Mental Health Information Helpline will be open Monday – Thursday, 9:30am – 5pm to provide signposting and brief interventions for callers with complex needs. The service will be delivered by 4 telephone helpline volunteers who will use Mind in Harrow’s mental health directory of services to signpost callers to the appropriate support.

Volunteer Title: Mental Heath Information Helpline Volunteer

Key Roles and Responsibilities: To provide callers with information, emotional support and non-judgemental listening. To adhere to the scheme’s policies and procedures. To work as part of a team of volunteers and engage in regular support and supervision.

Days and Hours: Half-day per week, specific timing to be agreed

Time commitment within project: 1 year

Any other specific requirements: Volunteers need to be over 18 years of age and have some appreciation of mental health issues. To be willing to provide 2 references and complete an Enhanced CRB check with supporting documentation.

“Hidden Minds” Heritage Project

  • Brief outline of project: This project will train 30 volunteers in heritage skills (e.g. collecting oral histories) so that they are able to uncover the hidden history of Shenley Mental Health Asylum. The findings will be put together in a ground-breaking exhibition which will be delivered to four community venues.

    Volunteer Title: Hidden Minds Project Volunteer

    As a volunteer you will be:
  • Trained in a range of heritage skills
  • Collecting people’s first hand experiences of life in Shenley
  • Visiting local and national archives
  • Gathering photos and documentation
  • Are you a ex-staff member or patient of Shenley Mental Health Asylum? If so we would love to hear your story in confidence

Any other specific requirements: We are looking for project volunteers with a range of life experiences and from a variety of backgrounds

Befriending Scheme

We rely on volunteers to help support our work to people experiencing isolation and loneliness. You can volunteer at Mind in Harrow for a couple of hours a week.

Befrienders offer support, encouragement and time to listen. You can help someone to develop their interests, get out and about, make new contacts, and above all to feel more comfortable with another person.

We value the experience of mental health service users and welcome people from Harrow's diverse communities to become volunteers.

What volunteering with Mind in Harrow's Befriending scheme can offer:

  • Regular support
  • An opportunity to meet new people
  •  The satisfaction of helping others

We pay out-of-pocket expenses and have full insurance cover (except for car insurance for passengers).
