Mind in Harrow has received funding from the City Bridge Trust which will enable the setting up of a new two-year Performing Arts Project. This project will be run as part of the well-known Stepping Stones project and will build on the success of the innovative ‘Call to Rescue’ drama group sponsored by Mind in Harrow in previous years.
Supported by the project staff, participants will build upon their shared experiences to develop and produce their own interactive dramatic performance and accompanying programme about mental health – challenging the audiences perceptions about mental health whilst reinforcing participants’ skills and confidence to manage their own.
Each year, up to 12 mental health service users will enrol as participants on our Performing course and 12 on our parallel Production course where they will learn about staging a performance.
The first year of the project will be held exclusively for Harrow’s refugee and asylum seeking mental health service users; primarily for the local Somali community with whom we already have an established relationship. Given that the Somali community have strong oral and story telling cultural traditions, this project will provide many Somali mental health service users a unique opportunity to explore and share with peers their experience of mental health and through the interactive performance, with the wider community too.
