Tamil Mindful Money Project

The Tamil Mindful Money Project offered workshops on Welfare Rights & Money Management and Healthy Living for Less, as well as one-on-one support, to members of the Tamil community.

The Tamil Mindful Money Project aimed to

  • Recruit and train Peer Educator volunteers to deliver workshops to Tamil community members in Harrow affected by mental health issues
  • Help increase the well-being and self-confidence of Tamil community members
  • Help reduce isolation and create opportunities to meet others
  • Provide one-on-one support, including interpreting, to help increase access to mental health and other health and social care services

Who was it for?

The project was for Tamil community members, aged 18 years plus who had lived experience of mental health issues and who lives in the Borough of Harrow. 

What was on offer?

The Tamil Mindful Money Project offered two workshop programmes, which could be booked onto via the Tamil Mindful Money Worker. Each workshop ran weekly over four weeks and lasted for 2 hours. They were co-facilitated by the Tamil Mindful Money Worker and trained Peer Educators from the Tamil Community.

‘Welfare Rights/Money Management’ Workshop (4 weeks)

These workshops gave information on:

  • Welfare rights and support including employment benefits, Harrow emergency relief scheme funds and housing benefit
  • Setting a household budget
  • Tips on saving money

‘Healthy Living for Less’ Workshop (4 weeks)

These workshops gave information on:

  • How to eat healthily for less
  • Health Checks & how to exercise for less
  • Yoga/Meditation
  • How to reduce unhealthy & costly habits (e.g. smoking, alcohol)

At these workshops participants could also discuss important issues and offer mutual support.

One-on-one support

Workshop participants were also able to access further assistance through the Tamil Mindful Money Worker.

Volunteering for the project

Peer Educators supported the Tamil Mindful Money Project by:

  • Co-facilitating weekly workshops
  • Promoting the workshops to the Tamil Community
  • Supporting clients to understand which services could help them
