Befriending volunteer

As part of our Autumn 2022 recruitment we welcome male and female befrienders and as part of this new group, to meet the needs of a current client we specifically need :

  • a middle aged or older Male volunteer to befriend an older male adult.

For all interested applicants please complete a volunteer befriender application form or get in touch if you are available and can help. We can have an initial chat with you if you would like to discuss the role and what’s involved before you apply.

Job summary

Befriend on a one to one basis that normally lasts for 2 hours per week for 1 year for each client.

Criteria

  • We accept volunteers from all groups in the community and backgrounds. Because of the nature of our work we can only accept volunteer applications from those aged over 18 years old.
  • Experience of mental distress, your own or others’ can be helpful but it is not essential.
  • You must be reliable and able to give time on a regular basis.
  • You need to be patient, a good listener, and able to accept other people as they are.
  • Ideally befrienders should be living in Harrow which is in North West London , living in one of the surrounding areas.
  • Our volunteers are available for two-three hours on a weekday during the day (morning or afternoon) as we do not have a demand for evening or weekend befriending and our office is not open outside usual working hours.

Hours

2 hours per week for 1 year for each client.

If you are interested please read the role description and then complete the Befriending application form  and Equalities form to register your interest . You must be available for 2 hours a week, on a weekday daytime to fulfil this role. You will need to be interviewed prior to being offered a place on the training.

Training courses are remote at present and prospective volunteers need to complete reading and tasks remotely and also attend Zoom training sessions. We usually run training courses every 6 months. The dates of the next course will be confirmed closer to the time and will be in the Autumn 2022.
