Stepping Stones

The Stepping Stones project offers support to people who experience mild to moderate mental health needs through an exciting range of low-cost courses that vary each term.

Online Stepping Stones courses

Autumn 2021

Please see details below of how to join Stepping Stones online courses running during the autumn 2021 term.  These courses are open to all Harrow residents with mental health needs.

All our Stepping Stones summer term courses are now being offered free and online using Zoom video conferencing with tutor guidance.  We apologise that we are not running any face-to-face courses at the moment.

Please note that you will need to have the technology required to access these courses; a smartphone, iPad/tablet or computer/laptop with Wi-Fi internet access for Zoom video calling so that you can view our tutors teaching a live class. 

You will also need to have an email address so that we can send you a link to join the class.  You will need to download Zoom first to your device to be able to participate.  In the pre-group session we will show you the basic features of how to use Zoom so that you can make the most of the course.

The autumn 2021 Stepping Stones online courses on offer are:

  1. Cartoon and Comic Art

Tuesdays and Wednesdays 2.30pm-4.00pm

Tutor:  Steve Marchant

Course starts: 06/10/21

Course ends: 24/11/21

This course will be delivered live directly from the Cartoon Museum by a professional Cartoonist.  There will be a series of fun and uplifting workshops suitable for all levels of ability.

You will learn about storytelling using simple comic-strips, how to draw your own cartoon faces, bodies and places, as well as a few well-known ones from TV and comics. Most of all, you will have fun.  Those who have previously attended the course can develop and progress their skills on this course.

Each week the tutor will share some examples from the museum’s collection of original cartoon and comic art.

  1. Healing Yoga for Body & Mind: Men & Women

Mondays and Thursdays 10.30am-12.00pm

Tutor:  Sangeeta Bhandari

Course starts: 11/10/21

Course ends: 29/11/21

Yoga is a holistic practice that enhances your physical health and creates mental clarity and calmness. In this course you will work with the breath and move at a comfortable pace increasing body awareness, strength and flexibility and reducing symptoms of stress, depression and anxiety. For Men and Women.

This course is for everyone, no previous experience is necessary.

  1. Creative Imagery & Writing for Fun

Mondays and Thursdays 3.00pm-4.30pm

Tutor:  Debbie Dye

Course starts: 07/10/21

Course ends: 22/11/21

Gain confidence and enjoy fun ways to explore creative Imagery and writing to enhance mood, well-being, confidence and expression. Join in the fun and create in a group and as individuals.

Subjects will include: Poetry, Limericks, Creating a story, To Blog or not To Blog, Goal vision boards, Images to tell a story – Photography and Video, Online creative tools, Creativity for mindfulness.

Important note – Please note any Home learning tasks set are for fun and self-development. They are not compulsory and most learners choose tasks that will enhance their own creative journey.

 4. Dance & Creative Movement – Women only

Tuesdays and Fridays 10.30am-12.00pm

Tutor:  Jasmine Chiu

Course starts: 05/10/21

Course ends: 14/12/21

Led by professional contemporary dancer Jasmine Chiu, this course will take you through gentle and dynamic dance exercises that will get you up and moving to music!

You will learn movement fundamentals that will increase balance, flexibility, and rhythm in a creative and supportive environment.


*Please note that the Bollywood Dancercise Women only course has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.


5. Singing for Fun

Wednesdays 11.00am-12.30pm and Fridays 2.30pm-4.00pm

Tutor:  David Phelops

Course starts: 13/10/21

Course ends: 01/12/21

Singing is the most wonderful and natural form of self-expression. If you enjoy singing, or the idea of being able to sing, then this is the course for you.  No previous singing experience is required.

The focus is on you developing your singing skills, building your confidence and learning from other cultures.  From simple songs and rounds and an introduction to basic vocal and breathing techniques, you will be able to share your ideas and passion for the music you love, explore familiar and new styles of music, with an emphasis on an exchange of cultural and musical styles and languages – from Blues, ballads and Bollywood, to Rock n Roll and Musicals.


These online courses run over a 8-9 week period.  This includes a pre-group session, six weeks of classes guided by a tutor and a post-group session.  Please note that there will not be a half term break.

  • The pre-group* session is one meeting of 1.5 hours. These sessions will start from 4th October 2021.
  • Classes are 1.5 hour long, there will be two classes each week for each course from October-December 2021.
  • The post-group* session is one meeting of 1.5 hours. This will run the week after the courses end from November-December 2021.
  • Please note the time required for each course:
    • 1 course – 3 hours a week
    • 2 courses – 6 hours a week
    • 3 courses – 9 hours a week

Please ensure that you can make the time commitment before expressing your interest in any courses, as places are limited and we could lose funding from non-attendance.

* It is essential that learners attend the pre and post group sessions.

How do I join Stepping Stones online courses?

Step 1: Email us your course preference choices as soon as possible to SteppingStones@mindinharrow.org.uk with the following information:

  1. Your full name.
  2. Your first and second choice of course preference. You may add a third course choice but we will be allocating places according to availability.
  3. Please let us know if you would like to do one, two courses or three courses if you can make the time commitment. Please check that you are available on the days and times of your chosen course before applying.  We require a commitment that you will be able to attend the whole course.
  4. Please let us know if you completed a Stepping Stones course with us before, and if so, how long ago?

Step 2: Please wait to receive an email from Stepping Stones at Mind in Harrow with further instructions on how to enrol

  1. We will be allocating places from the emails that we receive at SteppingStones@mindinharrow.org.uk on a first-come first-serve basis.
  2. Once we have noted down your course choice/s, we will email you with a link of how to enrol.
  3. You can then fill in an online enrolment form from the link we have sent you. Please do not complete any enrolment forms until you have received an email from us with the link to enrol.
  4. We will contact you to confirm your place and which course/s you have been successful in enrolling on.

All new learners who have not completed a course with us before will be required to have a short interview via video call with the Stepping Stones team to assess their suitability for the course.  This will also apply to learners who have not completed a Stepping Stones course for 2 years or more.

All learners who are interested in joining a physical activity course will need to complete a physical activity questionnaire.  We cannot guarantee any places until all forms have been completed and we are satisfied of your suitability for the course. 

We try and ensure that all applicants get a place on at least one online course.  If there are places left we will try and offer you a place on a second course, if you have requested this in your email to us.  If you can make the time commitment we may offer you a place on a third course if there is availability.
