Black History Month: Standing Firm in Power and Pride

A time to honour heritage, amplify voices, and build understanding

Every October, across the UK, we mark Black History Month, a dedicated period to celebrate the achievements, stories, and resilience of Black communities. This year’s theme, “Standing Firm in Power and Pride,” invites us to reflect on both the strength of Black identities and the ongoing struggles that demand our attention.

At Mind in Harrow, we see Black History Month as more than a commemorative month—it’s a moment to deepen our commitment to equity, inclusion, and mental wellbeing for Black communities. Many members of our community face complex pressures, from systemic inequalities to cultural stigma, when seeking mental health support. In this month, we aim to centre Black voices, highlight Black-led initiatives, and open conversations that both celebrate and challenge.

We also encourage everyone to engage with external resources and understandings of Black history and lived experience. This month, let’s walk together in solidarity. Whether through listening, learning, or acting, we can all contribute to a Harrow where Black lives are valued, histories are honoured, and mental health support is accessible without barriers.
