"Hidden Minds" Heritage Project

The "Hidden Minds" project ended in October 2012. The exhibition displays and research materials can be seen on the website of the St Albans Out of Sight Out of Mind project.

About "Hidden Minds"

From October 2011, with the help of 16 project volunteers, the "Hidden Minds" Project collected information about Shenley Hospital through local and national archives and oral history interviews with ex patients, staff and those that had a connection with the Shenley Hospital. The project collated a fantastic range of exhibition material including listening clips with recollections from patients and staff, and the original invitation to the royal opening of the Hospital.  The project volunteers developed exhibition panels including images and information about Occupational Therapy at Shenley, the treatments used, Villa 21 and the move to community care.  The exhibition was displayed at number of locations and events during 2012.

The project was funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund.

The "Hidden Minds" project on the BBC website

A new online exhibition reveals how Shenley Hospital was one of the most ground-breaking mental health institutions of its time. To its former patients and staff, the hospital's experimental ethos is remembered for both good and ill.

An article about the "Hidden Minds" project, through which a team of trained volunteers conducted oral history and archive research to create a new exhibition about Shenley Hospital in Hertfordshire, was published on the BBC News website in January 2013. The article, written by Dhruti Shah, describes the project and provides interesting background information about life at Shenley. Mind in Harrow is very grateful for the funding and advice of Heritage Lottery Fund, which made this project possible.
