Ubah's story

Hayaan peer educator

Hayaan gives me the opportunity to work in an area where ethical values can play a role in transforming society

I have been a volunteer at Hayaan Project for the last three years. The Hayaan project is based at Mind in Harrow (West London). I was recruited and trained as a “peer educator” to support the local Somali community who are suffering from mental health. The hard work and commitment of people working to Hayaan permitted me to reduce isolation, increase confidence and provide advocacy and interpreting support to people from my community living in Harrow and suffering from mental health. The term ‘Hayaan’ in Somali is ‘moving on to a better and safer place’. Hayaan gives me the opportunity to work in an area where ethical values can play a role in transforming society. I became now a person from UK Somali diaspora committed to build an inclusive and diverse society.
